Tips for Restful Sleep

If you have listened to the world of wellness and fitness at all, you would know that the importance of rest isn't somethings you should sleep on. ;) No matter what you are doing for your mind and body, it will never be as effective as when you are also getting adequate rest alongside your efforts. However, that is easier said than done. There are many things that can rob us of quality sleep and rest. Here are some tips to help get more and better sleep:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule: Nothing interrupts sleep rhythm quite like our own lack of rhythm in the first place. Yes, it takes discipline but this helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up naturally.
  • Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: When I can't seem to wind down before bed, I like to read, take a bath, or engage in some other relaxing activity. This can get our minds and body in a more relaxed state, making it easier to fall asleep.
  • Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening, as it can stay in your system for up to 6 hours or more. While alcohol might make you feel sleepy initially, it disrupts sleep cycles and can cause you to wake up throughout the night. I try not to have caffeine after four in the afternoon but you need to do what feels right for you.
  • Expose Yourself to Natural Light During the Day: Sunlight exposure, especially in the morning, helps regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. Try to spend some time outdoors each day, or sit by a window with natural light.
  • Get Regular Physical Activity: Engaging in daily exercise helps you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep. This is due to using energy enough for your body to feel the need to recharge with good, natural rest. Just try to avoid intense workouts close to bedtime, as they can be stimulating.
Like many of my blog posts that include tips, I know these are not the only ones but they are ones that are very relevant to my own experience. What are some tips you liked reading about? What tips do you have to add to these?

  1. Love this! The tip I liked reading the most about from the ones you suggested is exposing yourself to natural light during the day, I think that's super important and a lot of people forget how much good natural sunlight does for you. Another thing I like to do to unwind and get ready for bed is do a facemask or self care acitivity to relax my mind and feel ready for bed.

  2. As someone who has found there sleep schedule has been all screwed up since coming to college (partially because I'm a firefighter and get woken in the middle of the night for calls), I think these tips are very valuable. My favorite has to be the relaxing routine tip: I love to listen to music before bed, as it helps lull me to sleep. I do have to say, I've tried reading before bed before, but as an avid reader, that actually just ruins my sleep schedule because I have to read just one more chapter. Another thing I used to do all the time, and really should get back into, is writing before I go to bed. Dump out all my creative thoughts and energy onto paper before bed allows me to go to sleep with a clear mind and the satisfaction of being productive in my writing goals.

  3. I have a very messed up sleep schedule with a puppy. Luckily I have potty trained her so I can finally be asleep for 8 hours. My bedtime is strictly 9 pm and I try to wake up around 5:45, 6. I need to learn to put my phone down before bed or else I will scroll forever. Thank you for all the tips!

moving mountains

Welcome back, friends! In May 2023, I rode the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, a bike ride that is roughly 50 miles long in Colorado from Durango to Silverton. It was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have ever done. I defeated two mountain passes higher than 10,000 feet on this point-to-point ride, with more than 6,000 feet of vertical climb and two descents. I cried at the top of the last mountain pass and when I finished as well. Although, this means that during my sophomore year of college, I was working many hours a week and training for my race on top of my studies. This was half the battle of the whole thing.     How did I find time to do it all? Well, I started with a planner. My time was budgeted in there perfectly. I made sure to get a planner that was weekly/daily so that I could have the time blocking feature for each day. I recommend you do the same. (Day Designer has great options) Each Sunday I filled in when I would be at work, school...

5 of my favorite toxin-free swaps

In our world today, we are surrounded by things that can poison us. I know that sounds dramatic but if you really look into it, you would be shocked at the things that we are putting in our bodies and environments. When we are prioritizing health, it means making active changes in all facets of life. It will take time but one swap at a time is progress nevertheless. Here are 5 swaps that I have made that I do believe have improved my quality of life.  Household cleaning products: Have you ever looked at the ingredients on a regular household cleaning product like Windex? Talk about toxic chemicals! I recommend making your if you have the resources. If you can't, brands like Evergreen from Target are great options.   Food storage containers: I know little plastic options are easy and cheap but that can expose your body to many microplastics over time. Investing in glass and stainless steel containers have been the right supplement for me. Also, they feel nicer to use...

Tips to getting out of the "slump"

Have you ever experienced the "slump?" I don't know if I've mentioned this yet but I've been trying to get back into running. My boyfriend and I are both training and planning to run a marathon (or half) next April. However, I've just been getting back to it this week after about two weeks off even though I really didn't feel like it. It is hard to get back on the horse, no matter what it is for, running or not. There is no denying it. Here are 3 tips I used to feel motivated again.  Find some people who inspire you and get into their content. Watch videos, listen to podcasts, check out their social media posts, and more. They often have the best tips for reaching your goals if they align with their brand and the journeys that they share can help inspire you to continue.  Another thing you can do is materialize your vision of your goal. I recommend vision boards and journaling your progress. This helps keep yourself accountable and in line with your own g...
